BetMGM Uses Vikings Deal to Target Alberta’s New Market and Ontario’s Crowded iGaming Field
A Minnesota Vikings partnership gives BetMGM one campaign across Alberta’s new regulated market and Ontario’s established online gaming sector.
BetMGM has signed a multi-year agreement with the Minnesota Vikings to become the team’s official sports betting and online casino partner in Canada.
The deal gives BetMGM rights to use Vikings branding in approved betting, casino and marketing activities. It was announced on September 10, 2026.
The agreement includes Vikings Big Kick LuckyTap, a casino game developed by Design Works Gaming. BetMGM Casino offers the game in Alberta and Ontario, according to BetMGM and G3 Newswire.
Alberta’s new market
Alberta launched its regulated online gaming market on July 13, 2026. The province estimated that about 70 per cent of online gambling had previously taken place through unregulated operators.
BetMGM’s Vikings campaign reaches Alberta less than two months after the province opened its regulated market, where operators are competing to shift players toward approved platforms.
Alberta separates market management from regulation. The Alberta iGaming Corporation conducts and manages the market, while Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis regulates operators and enforces compliance.
Registered operators must provide tools and information that include:
- Financial and time limits
- Player activity statements
- A provincewide self-exclusion program
Alberta also prohibits advertising that targets minors or vulnerable people. The province can remove operators that fail to meet its standards.
That means the Vikings branding can support BetMGM’s launch strategy, but the campaign remains subject to Alberta’s advertising and player-protection rules.
Ontario’s established competition
Ontario’s regulated online gaming market opened on April 4, 2022. Private operators must register with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and sign an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.
BetMGM Canada remains listed by iGaming Ontario for casino, poker and sports betting. The operator directory listed 49 operators and 84 gaming websites as of September 1, 2026.
Ontario is therefore a more established and crowded market than Alberta, where operators are still competing for recognition after the July launch.
Why the partnership matters
The Vikings agreement shows how sports partnerships can connect sportsbook brands with online casino products. The new game does not place bets inside Vikings broadcasts. Instead, it uses the team’s identity to direct fan attention toward a casino product available in two regulated provinces.
For consumers, the legal status of the game depends on location. Registration requirements, gambling rules and player-protection systems remain province-specific.
The partnership does not create a national Canadian licence. BetMGM is using one sports brand across two markets that operate under different regulatory systems.
Ontario has operated its private-operator framework since April 4, 2022. Alberta’s regulated system began on July 13, 2026. The Vikings deal gives BetMGM a single marketing platform while the two provinces continue to apply separate rules.
