One Match, Two Results: AFC Toronto Reaches Canada’s Final Four
Kaylee Hunter’s extra-time goal sent AFC Toronto past Vancouver, while the same game remained a 1-1 league draw after 90 minutes.
AFC Toronto reached the semifinals of the inaugural W Canadian Championship on October 4, 2026, beating Vancouver Rise FC 2-1 after extra time at York Lions Stadium. Kaylee Hunter scored the deciding goal and sent the home side into Canada’s final four.
The match produced two official results. In the Northern Super League standings, it finished as a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. In the national championship, Toronto won 2-1 after 120 minutes.
The unusual outcome gave Toronto a semifinal place without changing either club’s regular-season league record.
Hunter decides it in extra time
Lena Silano put Toronto ahead in regular time. Vancouver’s Latifah Abdu later levelled the score and forced the quarterfinal into extra time.
- League result after 90 minutes: 1-1
- Championship result after extra time: AFC Toronto 2-1 Vancouver Rise FC
- Decisive goal: Kaylee Hunter in the 100th minute
Waking the Red reported that Hunter redirected a header from Shelina Zadorsky after a corner by April Lantaigne.
A new route for Canadian women’s clubs
The eight-team W Canadian Championship gives women’s clubs a national competition beyond the Northern Super League season. AFC Toronto’s semifinal place keeps alive a route toward the 2027 Concacaf W Champions Cup and, through that pathway, a potential place at the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup in 2028.
Toronto now waits for its semifinal opponent. Vancouver is out of the tournament after taking the quarterfinal beyond 90 minutes, while Toronto leaves the night with a win that counts in the cup and a draw that remains on its league record.
